Human Factors and Ergonomics @ San Jose State

Upcoming Events

by Joey Elyacy

The San Jose State University (SJSU) chapter of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) has several upcoming events in store for the remainder of the semester.

On Thursday, November 11, the chapter will hold its monthly meeting in the Engineering building, room 294, at 6:30 p.m. Aside from administrative issues, we are proud to have a speaker, Daniel Rosenberg from Oracle, give a lecture on “Designing for the Challenges of Global User-Centered Design (UCD).”

Rosenberg, VP of User Interface Design for Oracle Corporation, is a leading contributor in the user experience design community. Having given lectures on return on investment (ROI) for user interface (UI) design in software, as well as the role of UI designers in the corporate culture, Rosenberg is a respected member of the human factors community.

Nonmembers are encouraged to attend this meeting to not only hear from human factors practitioners in the professional world, but to also meet other students and discover how they can become active in the human factors/ergonomics community.

A tentative speaking event is scheduled for Thursday, November 18th. The proposed speaker will be Dr. Ron Shapiro of IBM-Boston. A recent poll was sent out to all HF/E students asking whether or not they would attend this event. Further information will be sent out via email to all students about the status of this meeting. Dr. Shapiro has given numerous lectures and discussion panels about careers in human factors that are usually fun, interactive sessions.

Finally, Edward Tufte will hold four one-day lecture sessions on “Presenting Data and Information” in San Francisco and Palo Alto. Anyone interested should make plans to attend a session, either on Monday (December 6) or Tuesday (December 7) in San Francisco, or on Thursday (December 9) or Friday (December 10) in Palo Alto. A professor from Yale, Tufte has published numerous books on information design and has received more than 40 awards on content and design.

The price of admittance is $160 for students and $320 for non-students. All attendees will receive free copies of his books: “Visual Explanations,” “The Visual Display of Quantitative Information,” and “Envisioning Information.” More information can be found on Tufte’s web site: http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/courses We also have a regular social gathering every Tuesday night around 9:00 p.m. The place to be is the Mission Ale House (97 E. Santa Clara Street on the corner of Santa Clara and 3rd streets). Feel free to drop by and have a couple of beers (or a late dinner) with your fellow HF/E students.
